The BESS leadership agenda

How storage commercialisation changes the executive hiring brief.

Battery storage businesses need leaders who can connect project economics, grid realities, financing and operational delivery. A retained search brief should define the outcomes required at each stage of the business.

From pipeline to performance

Many storage businesses were built to originate and consent projects. As portfolios move into construction and operation, the leadership agenda changes: trading strategy, availability, warranty management and asset optimisation start to drive value.

The executive who built the pipeline is not always the one who should run the operating platform. Recognising that shift early is one of the most valuable things a board can do.

Define the outcome before the profile

An effective specification separates development-stage growth, construction execution and operational asset management. A Commercial Director may need route-to-market and revenue-stacking experience, while a Development Director needs depth in stakeholder, land and grid.

The question is not "who has run a battery business?" but "who has delivered this outcome, under these constraints, before?"

Assess beyond the CV

The strongest assessment tests how candidates made decisions under uncertainty, built teams and delivered results, not simply whether they have worked in battery storage. Adjacent sectors such as power trading, grid, utilities and other infrastructure often hold exceptional leaders.
